South’s drought has gotten worse this fall

About 90 million people are experiencing drought in the U.S., a federal tracker shows. Record summer heat left states from Arizona to Mississippi parched.  It has slowed the flow of the Mississippi River, allowing saltwater to travel up the river. And it contributed to one of Louisiana’s worst fire seasons. The El Niño climate pattern could ease the drought this winter.
