Located in northern Italy, about two hours from Milan, Homeland is both financially inclusive and environmentally sustainable — and it doesn’t hurt that it’s in a gorgeous part of the Alps. Unlike other ski resorts that charge a fee to use the lifts and ride the slopes, Homeland is free to access for skiers willing (and able) to walk. Visitors can climb 11 marked uphill routes and then descend to a spot of their choosing amid 9,000 acres of backcountry terrain. And it offers perks for eco-conscious adventurers: Rather than relying on energy-intensive lifts, Homeland promotes skiing based on “human power,” manager Walter Bossi told the Financial Times.
