Sam Smith – The possibility that America may collapse under a Trump presidency is backed by months of too close for comfort polls. And while there may be legal ways to deal with this – such a ban on Trump’s illegal candidacy under the 14th Amendment -there is hardly any mention of what role others might play in preventing it.
One example worth considering: Democrats could emphasize issues that will directly and positively affect the lives of Trump voters. Biden has already given this a start with his attack on grossly excessive pricing by pill makers, but such matters should be a major part of the Democratic campaign. Attacking Trump has already proven to be a failure, but creating an America his ordinary supporters would like more could make a difference.
The other worthy course: use state and local laws to maintain and build democracy. The South has used non-federal legislation for decades to undermine national rules and this strategy could be well used in reverse to undermine national corruption and cruelty.
Keep in mind: what Washington and national institutions do is only a part of the story.
