With the start of a new school year right around the corner, some states are bringing back free school meals for all kids, regardless of family income. The federal government funded such programs in 2020 due to the financial hardships brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic, but the waivers expired in June 2022. Now, nine states — California, Colorado, Maine, Michigan, Minnesota, Massachusetts, Nevada, New Mexico, and Vermont — have restored free meals for all. Most are permanent but some, like the one in Nevada, are currently just for the 2023-2024 year.

Newly declassified documents reveal that Gen. Leslie Groves—director of the Manhattan Project, the top-secret operation that built the atomic bomb during World War II—misled Congress and the public about the effects of radiation. He did so initially out of ignorance, then denial, and finally, willful deception. The documents also show that some scientists in the project, including J. Robert Oppenheimer, director of the Los Alamos lab where the bomb was first tested, kept mum about Groves’ lie rather than dispute him or confront the general directly.
The Miami-Dade Police Department is recovering multiple cars found submerged in a lake in Doral, Florida. Divers working for a private company to investigate a missing person cold case said they found 32 cars while exploring a lake nestled in an industrial park west of Miami. They notified the police, which began pulling the vehicles from the lake Tuesday morning.
