Too Busy During the Week? You Can Save Your Workouts for the Weekend

If you often find yourself too busy to squeeze exercise into your Monday-Friday, a new study should help alleviate any anxiety you feel about it. Published July 18, the paper shows that “weekend warriors” who work out mostly on Saturdays and Sundays had similarly lower risks of cardiovascular disease and stroke as those who got their sweat sessions in throughout the week.

Researchers looked at data on 89,573 individuals involved in the U.K. Biobank, a large-scale biomedical database. Using the guidance that people should aim for 150 minutes of moderate-to-vigorous physical activity per week, they examined whether it mattered when those minutes were achieved. About 42% of the subjects were active weekend warriors and 24% were active-regular exercisers, spreading their workouts out over several days. Both patterns were associated with lower risks of heart attack, heart failure, atrial fibrillation, and stroke, when compared to an inactive group.
