Benefitting from slavery story not benefitting from facts

Occupy Democrats -  Florida Republicans suffer a historic humiliation as a new report exposes their education policy which teaches that slaves benefitted from their bondage — it turns out that half of the example individuals used were never even slaves in the first place... Thanks to Republicans, Florida's 2023 Social Studies curriculum for sixth to eighth grade falsely teaches that "slaves developed skills" that could be used for "personal benefit." Apparently, conservatives think that being forced to do brutal agricultural work and other tasks was really just a form of resume building.

But when asked to provide specific examples of individuals who benefitted from their time as slaves, Florida's revisionist account of history completely fell apart. The state listed sixteen names when asked to provide proof that slavery benefitted Black people. One example they gave was Lewis Latimer. A museum dedicated to him states that he was in fact born to free, self-liberated parents in 1848. He later went on to become an inventor and helped develop the telephone — but none of the skills he used came from being a slave since he never was a slave. Several of the other examples were likewise born free.
