Dancers at the Star Garden Topless Dive Bar in Los Angeles have voted to become the only unionized strippers in the United States—joining a growing trend of young employees seeking workplace protection though labor mobilization.

Unhealthy air conditions caused by Canadian wildfires are prompting several districts to cancel school activities. New York City, Newark, and Philadelphia schools all halted outdoor activities like recess and sports, or moved them indoors. In Newark, where 1 in 4 children have asthma, the district is running air filters and asking principals to close building windows.

Many Tennessee third graders whose literacy instruction was disrupted by the pandemic are feeling the pressure from a new state reading law. The law requires students who don’t score high enough on a state test to attend summer school, get tutoring, retest, or repeat the grade. The stress caused one student to walk out of her school and left another in tears. “We know the state-mandated reading retention law has deeply affected these little learners,” Memphis district officials said.

Uber is launching a peer-to-peer car-sharing service that will allow people to earn money by loaning their car to strangers while they're not using it, Joann Muller reports for Axios What's Next. Uber got into the car-sharing business last year in Australia after acquiring Car Next Door. Now called Uber Carshare, the service will launch soon in North America, starting in Boston and Toronto. Car owners can set their own daily and hourly pricing, and availability will be listed in 15-minute increments, with no requirements for advance booking. Zipcar, now a unit of Avis Budget Group, has offered car-sharing since 2000.

Saturday marks the 60th anniversary of the Equal Pay Act, which prohibits employers from paying women less than men for the same work, Emily Peck writes for Axios Markets... In 1963, the typical woman working full-time, year-round earned 59¢ for every dollar earned by a male counterpart. In 2022, that number was 82¢, per government data. (For women of color, the gap is wider.) At the rate we're going, women working full-time year-round won't achieve pay parity with men until 2056, per calculations from the progressive Center for American Progress out this morning.
