Chalkbeat - Ellen Wingard wasn’t sure about teletherapy. The Massachusetts school administrator worried it would be “a waste of time” when her school district started offering it to students.... But she’s been impressed by how many students the virtual help has reached, and other benefits of having access to a larger pool of mental health professionals.
Wingard’s district is one of a growing number now offering virtual mental health support, including 13 of the nation’s 20 largest school districts. Many are spending millions on the service, according to our review, as they look for ways to address a youth mental health crisis that shows no sign of waning. “It’s not for everybody, but for those students and parents who want that, it’s been fantastic,” said JaMaiia Bond, who oversees student mental health services for Compton’s schools in California.
