Meanwhile. . .

At least two dozen people working at Donald Trump's Mar-a-Lago resort and residence have been subpoenaed, along with members of Trump's inside circle, in the Justice Department's investigation into the ex-president's unlawful retention and refusal to return hundreds of classified documents  taken from the White House.

A third of the country’s people live in households making less than $55,000. Many are not officially counted among the poor, but there is plenty of economic hardship above the poverty line. And plenty far below it as well. According to the Supplemental Poverty Measure, which accounts for government aid and living expenses, more than one in 25 people in America 65 or older lived in deep poverty in 2021, meaning that they’d have to, at minimum, double their incomes just to reach the poverty line.

Plenty of grocery items have been affected by inflation over the past year. But the price of eggs has been an extra conspicuous example. A major culprit: A nationwide outbreak of avian flu since February of last year — the worst ever, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture. Data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention shows that bird flu has affected more than 58.6 million birds in 47 states across the U.S., including “wild aquatic birds, commercial poultry and backyard or hobbyist flocks.”
