Tales from the attic: Playing with George James

Sam Smith - One of my favorite piano gigs was with the Phoenix Jazz Band (led by Bob Walter) at the Central Ohio Jazz Festival in 1990, because we had a surprise addition: an 84 year old sax player named George James. James needed help getting on the stage, but after that he needed none. After all, he had toured with Louis Armstrong as well as working with Fats Waller and Teddy Wilson. The tune is the Apex Blues, named after the Chicago club where Jimmie Noone's orchestra played. The club was raided and closed in 1930 by federal agents enforcing prohibition. One of those who played with Noone was Earl 'Father' Hines. Another was James.  Here's the tune
