There have been, and may still be cities / villages here in the U.S. that have sidewalks which exist for the sole use of walkers. Technically, even bicycles must stay off them, at least where I live.
Unfortunately, our country has been transformed by the automobile. Now, miles exist between home and where we need to go, and many / most roads don't have sidewalks. Now, it seems "hiking trails" made in parks and old railroad beds are our best choice for safe walking - unless we have some specific needed goal in mind - like shopping.
Not that this article was trying to be 'alarmist', but it did mention that almost 50,000 people were killed while walking along roads, and many injured, over a 9 year period. Which is terrible, and as a person who walks along roads where there no sidewalks, and bicycles there, I am sympathetic. And a tangential topic might be the 'window-darkening' material that some cars have, that make it very hard for people to even see the driver, much less look for some sign of recognition by the driver.
