What Justice Needs Now

JUSTICE seems one of those elusive concepts whose precepts might vary depending upon who is doing the observation.

Thinking back to the seemingly crazy kids in my grade school, I realize that I didn’t know them at all. Years later I found that two brothers actually did have reason enough to be ‘unusual’ because their parents tied them up to the piano leg in the evening, so that they could go out drinking. And more than one immigrant kids had more than enough reason to have a ‘chip’ on their shoulder possibly due to their treatment by ‘Mericans. But that was the 1950s, that can’t be happening today… can it?

And now, I have to wonder about just what a “Jury of one’s Peers” might mean. Is it to take a sampling of various people from the phone book or voter role from one’s county, and let them pass judgment? I no longer think so. I have seen people being very close-minded toward others, and suspected that they may have been raised in a much more kind, and forgiving world. A ‘county’ can have lots of streets to be “on the wrong side of”.

And, now that the Supreme Court has become more an ‘arbiter elegantiae’, that is, one that abhors the ‘imperfect’, the ‘flawed’, ‘the weak’, ‘the poor’. Their viewpoint comes from an ‘idealized’ version of Life-In-The-United States, but available to how many? And can their narrow-minded, theocratic, authoritarian minds ever understand John Doe? Is the idea of noblesse oblige even possible?
