Just a thought
If it bothers you to hear Biden talking about putting a black woman on the Supreme Court, it may help to recall that over the history of the court, there have been108 white men appointed for 115 openings.
That thought doesn't help at all. That argument is basically that we inherit the sins of our fathers. What a terrible argument.
If we are looking to have a fair system, it seems like a really bad idea to blame current white men and expect them to support one at election time.
Further are we just going to put black women until 108 have served on the bench; or an equivalent amount in line with population? And again, wouldn't that be punishing current white men regardless of their blame--a rather ironic outcome.
The whole thing seems like stupid politics; which is typical of Biden. Why didn't he just nominate a black woman. Coming out with the idea that he was only considering a black women was obviously going to be contentious. About 93% of the country aren't black women.
And it leaves open the accusation that the best person wasn't chosen; 'just' the best black woman.
And at least there has been some black representation on the bench. What about the 18.4 million Asian Americans who have never had any representation?
Maybe we do need some formal ethnic/race and gender quotas. And maybe that would work with a large pool of Supreme Court justices who could randomly be drawn from, rather than just the current nine, and throw in a retirement age or length of service, and maybe give each presidential a number of appointments. There's a lot we could do to make representation on the court look more like the US generally. And I look forward to seeing a black woman on the bench.
