Boosting civics education

The Center for Civic Education partners with a network of 50 state civics, government, and law programs sponsored by state bar associations and foundations, colleges and universities, and other civic and law non-profit organizations to promote teaching and learning about the Constitution and Bill of Rights. These state programs conduct local teacher professional development, hold conferences and organize local and state simulated congressional hearings for elementary and secondary students. Each year these state programs impact thousands of teachers and tens of thousands of students. If you would like to know more about your state program click on this map.

I’m sorry, I could be “way off the mark”, but I have trouble believing in, or trusting just about anything. No matter how lofty its goals seem.

With Republicans wanting to created “Patriotic” schools, and Lawyers and Police becoming increasingly opinionated and intransigent, how can we be certain about WE THE PEOPLE and their CENTER FOR CIVIC EDUCATION? Will this group start to wear Red MAGA hats in many of our States? Seems just about anything can be ‘bought’ or co-opted, even Religion.

Gordon Gekko ( Movie: Wall Street in 1987 ) “The richest one percent of this country owns half our country's wealth, five trillion dollars. One third of that comes from hard work, two thirds comes from inheritance, interest on interest accumulating to widows and idiot sons and what I do, stock and real estate speculation. It's bullshit. You got ninety percent of the American public out there with little or no net worth. I create nothing. I own. We make the rules, pal. The news, war, peace, famine, upheaval... you're not naive enough to think we're living in a democracy, are you buddy? It's the free market.”

Republicans and their Libertarian cousins believe Gordon Gekko’s Plutocratic oath:

“The point is, ladies and gentleman, that greed -- for lack of a better word -- is good.

Greed is right.

Greed works.

Greed clarifies, cuts through, and captures the essence of the evolutionary spirit.

Greed, in all of its forms -- greed for life, for money, for love, knowledge -- has marked the upward surge of mankind.

And greed -- you mark my words – will... save... that other malfunctioning corporation called the USA.”

How can something like the Center for Civic Education escape the tentacles of the zealots that form the American authoritarian ‘right’?

I might say “God Save Us All”. That phrase may still be legal for us hoi polloi, and not yet relegated to the ‘few’ with sufficient funds.
