Gallup polls have been notorious for their rightward-tilt since I was in grad school, in The Sixties.
Oh, and I should have mentioned that the choice of political or ideological affiliation is aimed at surface social approval, not identification. People claim an affiliation to avoid social trouble with neighbors, co-workers, etc.
