The presidents who helped lead us to Trump

Sam Smith - Bad as he was, and is, Donald Trump was not our first modern corrupt president. In fact, during half of fifty years ending with Trump's presidency, we had notably corrupt presidents - Nixon, Reagan and Clinton - who may have encouraged Trump to give it a try as well. While the Nixon is generally recognized, Reagan is not despite the fact that there were 138 administration officials investigated, indicted, or convicted, the largest number for any president in history. And although the media has faithfully failed to report much of it, the Clintons got away with things that must have encouraged Trump. It is important for us to keep in mind that Trump isn't the only problem we've had.

Hillary Clinton and the DNC bear the lion's share of blame for the Trump presidency.

Throwing stones at individual Presidents may not be the story. And while HRC may be ‘low-hanging-fruit’, she isn’t the story either.

The Repug Party and corporate millionaire thugs have fostered people who spew falsehoods and innuendo, all to inspire fear and hate. Religious zealots in the 1980s began to rail against anything ‘liberal’, even ‘science’; but initially more in response to Robert Mapplethorpe and other things than to praise Ronald Reagan. And a cabal was begun.

The Repug Party may have lingered in the grand scheme of things – just like the Dems, but for religious zealotry. EMOTION! That’s what the Repugs gained. No president could have inspired such devotion. Not even Dwight D. Eisenhower, a great war hero, inspired such slavish behavior.

Repugs ‘christened’ Ronald Reagan as the “Great Communicator”, and dragged Bill Clinton through the mud to define him as nothing more than a philanderer. But a sexual romp by a politician, from either party, was really not news. Maybe “W” will be recorded as the modern world’s Plato or Aristotle.

It was Carl Rove that seemed to create the ‘Orwellian’ atmosphere we now experience, and helped things more on their way to tRump and his supporters. Repug verbiage became a constant moving target, instantly moving to another spurious fact or accusation before the air cleared. And things continue to this day. “Rovian” descriptions of tRump I’m sure will be something like “The Great Humanitarian”,
