Getting Frederick Douglass started

Frederick Douglass National Historic Site - Frederick Douglass was not allowed to attend school, but at a young age he realized there was a connection between literacy and freedom. At the age of 12 he purchased this book, "The Columbian Orator", for 50 cents in Baltimore. It was a collection of revolutionary speeches, debates, and writings on natural rights. This book increased his awareness of the need for personal liberty and that slavery was wrong. Douglass also studied the text to hone his oratory skills.
