Just wondering

Sam Smith - Why do the "white supremacists" I've seen appear so inferior to all the other whites and blacks I have known? Aren't supremacists meant to be role models, and not just big white slobs?

As I look at pictures of the 6 January 2021 attempted coup in Washington D.C., I too wondered about the individuals taking part in this idiocy. Many / most of the men were not in the age group that one might expect youthful foolhardiness. A more apt description of these actions might be ‘sophomoric’. Actions of a ‘wise fool’ that proves that a ‘little’ knowledge can be dangerous.

As men age, we still have adequate amounts of testosterone and adrenaline. An analogy might be “All dressed up with no place to go.” We see movies like Rambo, or Fast-And-Furious, and we can feel long-forgotten muscles beneath our burgeoning fatty tissue. We imbibe in adequate amounts of liquid refreshments with other similarly aging military veterans (or veteran wanna-be men and possibly women), and pretty soon we ‘need to do something’… we believe ‘anything’. Grrr… In this case, even totally erroneous rumors spread by people with something to gain.

As a veteran myself, I know this is not universal. It would be unfair to suggest such a thing. People are better than that. But there are people who do respond to ‘suggestion’. And those whose lives might be lacking in meaning, or valued activities, and feel that their military training had ‘real’ meaning.

If the only tool you have is a hammer, everything looks like a nail...

Just a theory.

I engaged in a very long and in depth discussion that ended January 8 with a person claiming to be a follower of Trump and wanting to own the liberals. He claimed to be an educated person, but it was clear that facts, evidence, reasop, were no longer part of his psychological makeup. he stopped watching Fox and switched to newsmax as fox was too timid. He was much more interested in wastibng my time than actually ansswering real questions or looking at real evidence. I also once edebated a leading neoliberal advocate in RI abut economics. On camera he admitted that he had no facts and data, and did not care as long as the story made his point. When the leaders act like that, the followers must be less than the brightest bulbs.
