As an American I’m Sick of hearing about this whole Cuba thing! Sick, do you hear me, Sick.
It was Cuba that started this whole Palaver.
Heck, lots of people lost money when Cuba became communist. And they weren’t just normal folks like Earnest Hemmingway that lost their homes and / or money There were ‘rich’ folks! Important folks! Folks that actually ‘count’. Americans shouldn’t stand for anything less than the Blockade / Embargo.
Think about it. There were fancy night clubs, and expensive resorts that Very Important People had invested their (sometimes) hard-earned money into. All those vacation spots where important people got together to gamble, smoke cigars, drink tasty rum drinks, and play with hookers. These were ‘important’ people we’re talking about, not the hoi polloi, these were Rich people – and they lost actual Wealth for god’s sake...
Guys with funny names like “Jimmy the Something-Or-Other”, that owned their own boats, or maybe their boss’ owned the boats ( Like in the movie Key Largo ). Big boats with plenty of room in their holds to carry stuff ( some things just never get old, or fall out of fashion ). Also rich corporate guys. And Politicians maybe. Yah, that’s it… that’s my story and I’m sticking to it… Yah!
Well, on second thought, maybe I should agree with Cuba getting rid of Batista, and kicking out the U.S. corporations who owned much of the sugar industry, mines, and utilities. And land, and maybe resorts, etc. And changing both the ‘economic’, and social systems.
Cuba Libre, then, was not all that great of a place for many / most Cubans. It was the ‘pits’, and many people were killed. Lets call it República Neocolonial. After all, the many “Vacationers” to the island took advantage of activities that were not socially acceptable in their own countries – drinking, whoring, and who knows what else (drugs); and thus changing the Economic and Social structure of the island from an idyllic (although impoverished and prone to rebellion - apparently there was no ‘gun control’ laws), garden spot into one controlled by sweaty alcohol saturated American Dollars, and most likely riddled with venereal disease.
For Fun and Profit.
Any monetary system is a ‘man-made’ construct. And it could be argued that an unregulated capitalist economy is no better than a communist economy. It is good to take pride in a system that works, but pure hubris to purposely sabotage another system, especially when there are major faults at home.

Just what does our country represent?
