Correct. We have a Representative Republic. We have it for many of the reasons expressed in the article. If you really want to go down the rabbit hole and explore the nitty gritty, read the following:

It is a study of the private correspondence of numerous framers. It relays what the framers really thought of society as a whole. Most had a viewpoint that the rabble could not be trusted to make nearly any decision for themselves. If they had that capacity, they would not still be largely poor and in need of a job from the successful.

Especially interesting are the machinations and manipulations of the process in order to insure ratification. The vast difference in rules that were first agreed to, as compared to the rules followed is another indication that we basically traded one form of rule by the few, for yet another. The only real difference is the few at least had to live among the unwashed, as opposed to being across the pond.
