The five states in which the least percentage of people wear masks are also among those with the highest per capita rates of the virus. The five states with the highest percentage of people wearing masks are all in the list of lowest per capita rates of virus.

Before ascribing causality, some fact checking should be done. Not all masks are created equal. Yes, cloth masks will filter out the size of droplet that is created when one sneezes or coughs. It will not filter out that which is aerosolized. It's all about the micron...

That which is produced in your lungs in the form of virus piggy back to a particle of moisture happens to be 10 times smaller than the weave of a common cloth mask. Two or more layers is no more effective. Only when you get to N95 do you start to filter out the aerosols. Even then, that weave is on the threshold of range in size that the aerosol can be, so some still gets by.
If you go to the extent to wear a mask, you also are going to limit indoor interaction to a bear minimum. If you are not inclined to wear one, you are more likely to congregate indoors for hours on end. Even if you did wear a cloth mask, you would still be infected if you participate for hours, in a crowd, in close quarters. Control for that and you will find that mask wearing, by and large, is not the panacea people are hoping for.
There should be more science involved. There is science available to any who seek it. I have no problem with a mask mandate, as long as it is science based. If the country is ready to utilise the defense act and ramp up production of N95, such that all citizens are afforded access to a new mask each day, then leterrip taterchip. Until then, the blanket statement that masks save is just as much trafficking in intellectual dishonesty as claiming your constitutional rights are being trampled on because of a mandate.
If you are curious, this is what I wear if and when I have to enter a store; fitted with a N99 oil filter:
