Sam Smith - As the liberal class has become better educated and more separated from lower economic classes, its language has changed as well. This has helped people like Trump pretend to favor the latter.
The most egregious example of late is the phrase "defund the police" which has become an extremely useful tool for the right to use against liberals. You can argue until the cows come home that "defunding" doesn't have to mean eliminating, but to an ordinary American that's the way it can easily sound.
Far less damaging but still sounding a bit stuffy is the phrase systemic racism. Real people stick to racism and actually, according to Google, systemic racism was hard to find in a book until the late 1980s.
