Scott McLarty - Four important things to know about Social Security and Medicare:
(1) Contrary to slimy politicians, they're not entitlements or charitable handouts. They're funds that we pay into so we can draw on them when we need them.
(2) SS and Medicare have nothing to do with the deficit. They're separate from the federal budget. Even Ronald Reagan, no friend to these programs, knew this.
(3) The financial industry is lobbying and paying off Congress members like Mitt to kill or slash or privatize SS, which would force us to invest our retirement money in the high-risk Wall Street casino. Billionaires would reap hundreds of billions of dollars while millions of Americans watched their savings vanish.
(4) Republicans are the most enthusiastic about cutting these programs, but we can't trust establishment Democrats either. President Clinton held behind-closed-door talks with Newt Gingrich on privatizing SS, until they were interrupted by the Lewinsky scandal. President Obama appointed his bipartisan National Commission on Fiscal Responsibility and Reform ("Catfood Commission") to recommend cuts and postponement of eligibility for SS.
