Why this virus is such a problem

Sam Smith - One might reasonably wonder why so much attention is being given the coronavirus given that it has killed less than 2000 Americans. After all, those who die annually of flu or pneumonia are nearly 30 times the number who have died of the virus so far. And 340 times the number who will die of cancer this year.

But that is only part of the story. Here are a few ways that the current virus differs from other killer diseases but aren't getting much attention:
  • The major killers: heart disease, cancer, and accidents are not contagious.
  • Even traditional flu is not as contagious as the current virus. For example, one study found that those with the virus could spread it even before they have symptoms.
  • The health system is prepared to handle the current level of traditional diseases. The virus puts all sort of strains on it, such as a need for beds, test devices and ventilators.
  • We have little history with this disease and thus are unprepared to deal with it in the best way.
  • As the nation moves into panic mode, more strain is put on facilities such as hospitals and EMT services.
