How America compares with some other countries

1,700 inmates are released from Los Angeles county jails

Here's an actual quote from Rev Rose Banks, Colorado Springs Fellowship Church: There ain’t nothin in this Bible telling me to stay 10 feet apart from nothing. 20 feet apart from nothing. Here’s what you tell me: You can show it to me in scripture, that I should abide by that, I’m gonna do it, but if it ain’t in this book, I’m not doing it.

Light Rail Service Suspended in San Francisco, South Bay Area

Ridership on Monday was down 87 percent on the [NYC] subway, 94 percent on the Metro-North commuter railway, 76 percent on the Long Island Rail Road and more than 60 percent on buses from the same day last year

This week so far, the daily change in number of cases compared to the previous week:
o Globally up 41%
o USA up 289%
o China and South Korea no change
Death rate change during same period:
o USA is is up slightly
o Very small increase globally, in China, Iran and South Korea
o Worse: Italy
STATE STATS
o Increases of 3.4-4.7% in Washington, Massachusetts, Louisiana, Georgia
o  Although New York had the most cases - 38, 987 - its death rate is only 1.1%, similar to New Jersey, New York, Florida, Illinois, Michigan, California and Pennsylvania
P.S.

If you're looking for some good news, consider that the total number of cases and deaths is markedly below that of the most recent flu season, when -  according to CDC - over 35 million got the flu and 34 thousand died. That's a lot of deaths without much mention, more than 26 times the current number of virus deaths. We suspect that the non-attention to flu deaths may be related to the fact that, according, to the CDC, "In recent years, it's estimated that between about 70 percent and 85 percent of seasonal flu-related deaths have occurred in people 65 years and older."

The death rate is deceptively low because of the long lag -- perhaps two weeks on average -- between becoming symptomatic and dying. Your risk pool -- the denominator -- is the number who were infected two weeks ago, not today.
