GOP using crisis to try to cut Social Security

Common Dreams - The GOP's $1.8 trillion Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security Act would allow businesses to delay payment of the employer payroll tax—one of the primary funding mechanisms for Social Security—for the rest of 2020. "The Republican plan would replace Social Security's dedicated revenue [from the payroll tax] with deficit-funded general revenue, but this is a trap," explained Nancy Altman, president, Social Security Works. "Once the pandemic is done, Republicans will undoubtedly use the general revenue to demand cuts to Social Security in the name of 'reining in entitlements,' something they have already expressed their strong desire to do."
