Paul Shinkman, US News -   Japan's trade ministry said the ships [attacked in the Gulf of Oman]  were carrying "Japan-related cargo," and the attacks came as Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe was meeting with Iranian officials in a bid to ease tensions. Tokyo seeks to promote a de-escalation that would allow the U.S. to lift punishing sanctions against Iran and reconstitute its ability to sell oil that American allies, including Japan, need but have temporarily ceased buying because of Trump's policies.
