White House reportedly considered releasing immigrants in sanctuary cities

Market Watch -White House officials have reportedly tried to pressure U.S. immigration authorities to release detainees onto the streets of “sanctuary cities” to retaliate against President Donald Trump’s political adversaries.

The Washington Post, citing Department of Homeland Security officials and email messages, reported that Trump administration officials have proposed transporting detained immigrants to sanctuary cities at least twice in the past six months. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s district in San Francisco was among those the White House wanted to target, the Post wrote, citing DHS officials. The report said the attempt at political retribution raised alarm within U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement and that ICE’s legal department ultimately rejected the idea. A White House statement quoted by the Post said it was “just a suggestion that was floated and rejected, which ended any further discussion.” Pelosi’s office blasted the plan.
