Two thirds of Americans want stricter gun laws
67 percent of Americans support making US gun laws stricter, while 22
percent say they should be left as they are and 10 percent think they
should be made less strict.

An artifact of the corpomedia hyping the vanishingly-small number of mass killings, all of which are committed by people, generally men, with paranoid psychosis. The owners of corporations, including the corpomedia, are members of the 0.01% and don't want angry people to have access to anything more effective than harsh language.
There are specific guns that appeal to angry men with paranoid psychosis both for their lethality and their "bad ass" marketing appeal - assault-style semiautomatic rifles. Those same guns are also favored by tin-foil hat nutjobs who think that they can rebel against the US government or start a race war. If we ban ownership of those specific guns we will at least deprive nuts of easy access to own and train with these unusually lethal weapons. Universal background checks will help prevent these individuals from getting any guns.
