One reason things don't work right

Sam Smith - A majority of American citizens live in nine states and tend to be the most liberal.. This means that they have only 18 votes in the Senate. On the other hand, there were eleven states that seceded from America during the Civil War and remain among the most conservative. They have 22 votes in the Senate.

That actually illustrates one of the problems with single-seat representation and even non-gerrymandered districts: every district with a near-even split between the available choices pretty much guarantees that the only-slightly-smaller group will effectively be unrepresented.
