Democratic Socialists beginning to do better

Nation - Since the 2016 race finished, Democratic Socialists of America—the group forged over many decades by Michael Harrington, Barbara Ehrenreich, Dolores Huerta, Frances Fox Piven, Gloria Steinem, Cornel West and others to give voice to American democratic socialist vision—has experienced rapid growth in states across the country. And now DSA members are campaigning for and winning local races in states like Georgia and Illinois.

Democratic Socialists of America’s Maria Svart hails “a shot across the bow for politics as usual nationwide.”

More than a dozen DSA members now serve in local posts across the country, and their numbers are growing.

Socialism is democratic or it is not socialism. Supporters of the status quo can relax: the DSA (and Sanders) are social democrats. Marx and Engels, by contrast, wanted something rather different: 'in place of the old bourgeois society, with its classes and class antagonisms, we shall have an association in which the free development of each is the condition for the free development of all' (Communist Manifesto, 1848). Nothing like this exists, or has existed. The old lie about Russia being socialist or communist (Marx and Engels used the terms interchangeably) – and later, China, Cuba, Venezuela, etc – was identified remarkably early: in the August 1918 edition of the Socialist Standard

The differences between DSA and the Greens are minimal.

If these two Parties unite, this would strengthen the US left.

It is the unification of all parties to the left of center that will give progressives a real voice. We can sort out our minor differences after we have this voice.
