Anti-depressants associated with dementia
Mad in America - A study published in this month’s issue of the Journal of Clinical Psychiatry
found that the use of antidepressant drugs was associated with an
increased risk for the development of dementia. The researchers used the
Taiwan National Health Research Database to perform a retrospective
analysis of patients who were diagnosed with major depression and later
developed dementia. “Treatment with tricyclic antidepressants was
associated with a reduced risk of dementia, whereas treatment with
SSRIs, MAOIs, heterocyclic antidepressants, and other antidepressants
was associated with an increased risk of dementia,” they concluded.
