First state to adopt Common Core shows little progress

One News Now - Kentucky was the first state to implement the Common Core Standards. Now, after four years, it finds itself beset with flat and declining test scores and students who are unprepared for college-level work

Neal McCluskey with the Center for Educational Freedom at the Cato Institute suggests Common Core has done little good for the state.

“It is probably a little early to say that Common Core definitely isn’t working, but I think it’s also fair to say that we’ve gotten very little information that suggests it is working,” he says. 

McCluskey isn't optimistic that Kentucky students will be any better off in the future.

“Certainly looking at Kentucky, looking at Kentucky’s scores, considering that Kentucky was an early adopter, gives very little reason to be optimistic that Common Core is creating improvements in education,” he tells OneNewsNow.
