Project on Government Oversight - In this upcoming election, federal contractors will spend hundreds of millions of dollars to elect or defeat candidates with no requirements that they disclose how they’re spending their money. Unfortunately, we know all too well from past scandals what companies will do to influence how lucrative federal contracts are awarded. Federal contractors should not be allowed to spend unlimited amounts of money on elections with no oversight or accountability.
Federal contracts should be awarded based on merit. An executive order shining a light on political spending by contractors would go a long way in protecting the public from “pay-to-play” arrangements. Federal contractors and their senior managers should not be able to secretly influence our political system through anonymous political spending that could result in a payoff of lucrative contracts.
