Take Part - Tensions continue to flare at the University of Virginia after Wednesday’s bloody arrest of third-year student Martese Johnson. Johnson was beaten by law enforcement officers after he allegedly presented a fake ID at a bar. He says the identification was real and that he was not resisting arrest when the violence occurred.
Johnson and more than 350 other students attended a panel discussion on Friday afternoon that included a representative from the Virginia Alcoholic Beverage Control and the university police department, as well as the chief of the Charlottesville police department and Virginia’s secretary of public safety.
African American students dressed in black and chanted “Answer the questions we asked” when they deemed responses from the panel to be evasive or incomplete, reported the university’s newspaper, The Cavalier. Although representatives from some student groups felt the dialogue the panel began was positive, Johnson and other dissatisfied students walked out of the meeting, shouting “Black lives matter.”
