NPR plans to cut $5 million from its budget

Inside Radio - NPR plans to trim more than $5 million from its budget in the next fiscal year, aiming to maintain a balanced $300 million budget as it braces for financial uncertainty following the federal government’s decision to defund public media....

The recent decision by Congress — led by Republicans and supported by President Trump — to eliminate federal funding for public broadcasting has created financial instability throughout the public radio system. The Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB), the body that has historically distributed federal funding, will effectively cease operations by Sept. 30.

While NPR itself receives just 1% to 2% of its funding directly from the federal government, local member stations have relied more heavily on federal and state funds. In response, NPR is offering $8 million in relief to stations struggling with programming fees, but many station leaders say that won’t be enough to prevent significant service cuts.
