Sam Smith - My late father worked for the Roosevelt Administration and I covered my first Washington story in 1953 for WWDC, then an all news station in the capital. If you add add these dates together for nearly 90 years my father and I had an eye on our presidents and you know what? There's been none nowhere nearly as bad as Donald Trump. Even Ronald Reagan knew that tariffs were a hazard.
The Trump crisis, however, is not getting the historical disaster status it deserves. It is not merely a bad presidency; it is far worse than that. And if you add the post-Civil War reconstruction period to modern progress for blacks and women you're only talking about roughly a third of America's history as a country. We don't admit that most of our land's time has been in involved deep discrimination and cruelty towards many.
If you add women and blacks together, they make up over half our population but we rarely discuss this fact that is so revealing about our past, namely most of America's past was mostly just for white men.
Isn't it time to admit this? If nothing else it helps to explain Trump.
