NBC News - A judge accused of interfering with an immigration operation was arrested Friday and is now facing harsh criticism from the Department of Homeland Security.
Authorities claim Milwaukee County judge Hannah Dugan probed deportation officers for a judicial warrant when they appeared in the hallway of a courtroom to arrest Eduardo Flores-Ruiz, a man believed to be undocumented. The government says Dugan escorted Flores-Ruiz and his attorney outside of the courtroom, but agents arrested him shortly after.
Dugan is known to some in the immigration advocacy community as “someone who defends people in the court system,” says Christine Neumann-Ortiz, executive director of Voces de la Frontera.
She was elected to the Milwaukee County Circuit Court in 2016 but worked at several nonprofit organizations after graduating from the University of Wisconsin Law School, including groups focused on assisting domestic abuse victims and providing services to people who couldn’t afford lawyers.
“Nonprofit work is a great avenue to work for justice,” Dugan said in an interview with the Milwaukee Independent.
Dugan now faces charges of obstructing or impeding a proceeding before a department or agency of the United States and concealing an individual to prevent his discovery and arrest. Read the full story here.
