NPR - It's becoming increasingly difficult for musicians to make a living.
Streaming platforms pay them a fraction of a cent per stream, and the
cost of touring has risen. Some musicians go into debt just to tour
their latest album. To offset the volatility of their industry, some
artists have flocked to a social media platform primarily known for its
sexual content: OnlyFans. Streaming platforms typically pay $.003 to $.005 per stream
on average....
On top of that, live music isn’t making up for the loss seen from
streaming revenue. In actuality, some artists will experience a loss
after paying a band and crew a living wage for all the behind-the-scenes
work it takes to put on a show.
This is where OnlyFans has stepped in to help some creators with their
financial woes. The platform launched nearly 10 years ago as a way for
creators to upload content that “fans” pay for access. Fans can
subscribe or see content on a pay-per-view basis, and some can even tip
the creators. |
