Matt Carr, UK - If we look back on the way that western governments have responded to the atrocities of 9/11, virtually everything they have done has played into the hands of their jihadist enemies. Al Qaeda wanted to bring the ‘crusaders’ into the Middle East and Central Asia; we obliged them. Jihadism feeds off weak or failed states; we have helped given them four. Islamic State would like to have ‘crusader’ armies bombing Syrian cities and get involved in yet another open-ended war; we’ve done that too.
Again and again, ill-thought-out and often blatantly opportunistic forms of military intervention have helped create precisely the kinds of conditions in which al-Qaeda type formations thrive, while heavy-handed and authoritarian campaigns against ‘radicalization’ at home have only exacerbated the bitterness, alienation and anger that makes it easier for such groups to recruit.
The result is a global terrorist emergency that, unlike its predecessors, is not only global, but is potentially indefinite, because it is unfolding in so many countries and in so many different contexts.

Let us not forget the elephant in the room. This portrayal of radicalization in the region is a bit one sided and omits a significant player of long standing. Peace and stability will never manifest until this, too, is addressed:

Until the illegal Israeli occupation of the West Bank and Gaza is addressed conditions in the region will only continue to fester and deteriorate.
You're wrong, Anon 1113. Israel has nothing to do with Al Qaeda. The Saudis
have the PLO, Hezbollah, and Hamas to try to push the Jews into the sea.
As long as there is a Saudi Arabia, there can be no peace in the middle
east. The wars in the middle east make the Saudis' enemies and should-be
enemies weaker. The Saudis are the only ones who benefit from terrorism.
They are responsible for wahhabism and all the terrorism that results
from it. It's not about Islam. It's about Saudi power and wealth.

The Saudis are no pick-nick, then again neither are those offspring of the fascist Irgun who now drive the Likud party. Given the trillions of cubic feet of natural gas and frackable oil to be had in the Levant Basin, some questions remain as to who really benefits from what. The intrigues cooked up within the back rooms and halls hidden along Rothschild Boulevard one can only be imagined.
It's a safe bet, however, they're not planning on coming out of this without some kind of 'benefits'.
