Trump supporters, as demonstrated in this video, are a classic example of a personality type known as Right Wing Authoritarian Followers. They have been studied extensively by psychologist Robert Altemeyer and others. Altemeyer's estimates of the prevalence of RWAs in society actually track fairly well with Trump's poll numbers. My theory is that Trump (or more likely one of his advisors) has studied Altemeyer and crafted an electoral strategy around his theories. Altemeyer released a book about his work.
