Nearly a quarter of Americans open to secession

Reuters - The failed Scottish vote to pull out from the United Kingdom stirred secessionist hopes for some in the United States, where almost a quarter of people are open to their states leaving the union, a new Reuters/Ipsos poll found.

Some 23.9 percent of Americans polled from Aug. 23 through Sept. 16 said they strongly supported or tended to support the idea of their state breaking away, while 53.3 percent of the 8,952 respondents strongly opposed or tended to oppose the notion.

The urge to sever ties with Washington cuts across party lines and regions, though Republicans and residents of rural Western states are generally warmer to the idea than Democrats and Northeasterners, according to the poll.

Living on the West coast, the government based in Washington DC treats us like we are a colony. Maybe not as badly as DC it's self is treated, but "the West" includes a lot more land and people.

The Feds on the East coast are extremely removed from the West and when they "take action" on our behalf, it usually amounts to a large give away of natural resources, or some new "security" demand that is worthless when you have vast expanses of minimally populated land mass. I'd like to see the country, at minimum, split down the continental divide, so the West can determine it's own future. By dividing the US at the continental divide, it insures that the West would have full control of regional watersheds. If you don't control your own water, you are slaves to those that do.

Part of my succession interest lays with the principle of economies of scale. The US is unmanageably large, making it's problems largely unmanageable. Breaking the US into several different countries, with amicable relationships, would benefit most people. In banking, for example, "too big to fail" would need to be broken up into smaller banks by necessity for international borders.

I'd like to see the break up occur with a series of plebiscites, and ranked choice votes based on those plebiscites, all in a reasonable fashion. I fear that the break up will come with things breaking down, falling apart, and going broke, with discord, chaos, and looting.

Afghanistan has been called the "Breaker of Empires" for centuries. If that reputation holds true and at the end of that mess, the US could be divided into smaller more manageable entities, that are (hopefully) responsive to their respective populaces.

The west has been a huge recipient of eastern tax dollars for generations. Givent their attitudes, if they controlled their own water they would have run out already.

But I am for secession. Tesxas and all the other places run by anti science patriarchical wackos should leave so that we can actually move forward in the US. If we did not have the west, we would hnot ahve the fracking boom that threatens to destroy the world.
