Every organization that I have belonged to was run by elites, with no direct democracy in decision making. If elections were held, they were merely to choose between one elite and another elite. There was never a popular referendum on the issues.

Maybe that is the problem?

Occupy Wall Street, on the other hand, had popular votes on almost every issue, though I disagreed with their requirement for 100% consensus.
