The Supremes may be more damaging than Trump

Sam Smith - The Supreme Court has probably damaged America’s constitutional democracy more than what’s left of Trump’s life. On June 30, the court ruled that limits on political party coordinated expenditure limits violate the First Amendment. In other words, there are lots of ways you or Elon Musk can give money to a candidate in atrocious sums.

For example, the Maine Morning Star reports: “With Maine’s entire state Legislature up for election in November, even incumbent lawmakers aren’t safe in their reelection bids. With outside groups — that don’t have to disclose their donors — increasing their involvement in state elections, the legislative districts with the most outside spending feature lawmakers up for reelection. According to data from the Maine Ethics Commission as of Thursday, Oct. 29, outside groups spent roughly $4.6 million in state races.”
