Is lettuce safe to eat?

NY Times - It has been a summer of food-borne illness in the United States. Since May 1, tens of thousands of people have been sickened by cyclospora after eating contaminated iceberg lettuce. And in August, a salmonella outbreak associated with jalapeƱos affected at least 345 people in 27 states.
