NBC News -   Starting Wednesday, terminally ill patients in New York will gain the legal right to end their lives. Under a new law allowing medically assisted death, patients who a doctor says have less than six months to live will be able to take a lethal prescription medication that puts them to sleep, then ultimately stops their heart.

A  group of medical professionals has been readying for the change. Some patients, meanwhile, say the law brings relief. “I can have some assurance that if the suffering is too much to bear, that I have a peaceful option. And that peace of mind is invaluable,” said one breast cancer patient.
