Independent
- Residents across several
Philadelphia neighborhoods and surrounding counties spent Sunday grappling with
the aftermath of severe, short-lived thunderstorms that unleashed widespread
destruction.
The intense weather event,
characterized by powerful microbursts, swept through the region on Saturday
afternoon, leaving a trail of downed trees, severed power lines, localized
flooding, and significant structural damage.
One particularly dramatic
incident saw a building collapse in West Philadelphia, sending bricks cascading
into the street, crushing parked cars, and obstructing trolley tracks.
The National Weather Service
confirmed that at least four distinct microbursts delivered straight-line wind
gusts ranging from 60 to 70 mph (97 to 113 kph) across Montgomery and
Philadelphia counties between approximately 2:30 and 3:15 p.m. Saturday.
Despite initial speculation that
a tornado was responsible for the damage, which included part of a roof being
torn from a Philadelphia Housing Authority apartment building, NWS officials
definitively attributed the destruction to these straight-line winds.
