Virginia gets first woman governor

Axios - Abigail Spanberger was sworn in as Virginia's first woman governor in a historic inauguration yesterday.
  • Gov. Spanberger — formerly a U.S. House member from Glen Allen, northwest of Richmond — will be the first leader of the commonwealth referred to as "her excellency."
Old Dominion governors traditionally wear morning suits (formal daytime suits with long tails) to be sworn in. But Spanberger, 46, dressed in white, the color of women's suffrage. Spanberger told NPR: "I'm not going to wear a morning coat, not to disappoint anyone."
  • The new governor's white outfit included a long, white coat with gold buttons, paired with white gloves — a salute to the women's suffrage movement.

"I maintain an abiding sense of gratitude to those who work, generation after generation, to ensure women could be among those casting ballots, but who could only dream of a day like today," Spanberger said in her address. (AP)
