Kamala Harris vs. Gavin Newsom

Axios - Since they entered California politics over 20 years ago, Kamala Harris and Gavin Newsom have ducked a one-on-one showdown. Now the Democratic rivals are barreling toward what could be a contest on the biggest stage: the 2028 race for the White House...

  • The former vice president, now touting a bestselling new book, is seeking redemption after falling to Donald Trump last year. The California governor, a rising Democratic star, has burst onto the national stage this year as a leading voice in resisting Trump.

Their public niceties toward each other cloud a longtime, behind-the-scenes tension that's beginning to surface as both weigh runs for president.

  • Harris set off rare public sniping between the pair last month when she took a dig at Newsom in her new book "107 Days," about her short run for president in 2024.
  • She wrote that when she reached Newsom to ask for an endorsement, he said he was hiking and would call her back. Newsom did post his endorsement online hours later. But Harris wrote that Newsom never called back.

Newsom recently said he privately asked Harris why she didn't mention in her book that he had quickly endorsed her, and she responded: "On book tour. Get back to you later."

  • He told Stephen Colbert last month: "As the Democratic Party, we have a lot of work to do to make up for our failures in the past. We got crushed in this last election."

Behind the scenes: Many former Harris staffers, including the leadership of her 2020 presidential campaign, are now working for Newsom and are expected to stay with him if he runs in 2028. Read on
