Increasing walking speed by 14 steps per minute boosted the odds of
meaningful functional improvement in older adults with frailty.
Participants who walked “as fast as they safely could” were
nearly twice as likely to improve on a standard 6-minute walk test
compared to those walking at a casual pace.
These gains were linked to individual speed increases, not just being in the “intensive” exercise group.
The findings suggest that tracking walking cadence with simple devices can guide personalized exercise plans in senior care.
